Public Elementary & Middle Schools
Canadian public elementary and middle schools
Canada’s public elementary and junior high/middle schools provide international students with the opportunity to receive high-quality education, emphasizing diversity, inclusiveness and academic rigor. Public schools offer standardized courses at affordable tuition, while private schools offer smaller class sizes and higher-cost professional courses. Both options are fully prepared for students to receive higher education and future career success, and each option provides unique benefits based on students’ needs and goals.
Public school characteristics
Public schools usually have larger class sizes, especially in large cities. The class size of each classroom ranges from 25 to 35 students. In terms of curriculum, follow the curriculum prescribed by the provincial government to ensure comprehensive standardized education. Subjects such as mathematics, science, English/French, social studies, and physical education are compulsory, and art, technology, and language can be selected in the middle school. Some public schools offer professional courses, such as the International Baccalaureate (IB) or French immersion courses. Most public schools in Canada teach in English or French, depending on the region. Public schools are known for their inclusiveness and welcome students from different backgrounds, including international students. The school provides support for ESL (English as a second language) and FSL (French as a second language) students. At the same time, public schools offer a variety of extracurricular activities, such as sports, music and clubs. Although resources vary, most schools provide students with ample opportunities to explore interests outside the classroom.
