Family Sponsorship
Canada’s family reunion immigration program is an important part of the country’s immigration policy, allowing Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor close relatives to come to Canada as permanent residents. The program aims to strengthen family relationships and allow eligible family members to apply for permanent residence to live with their families in Canada. Here we will introduce several key categories of family reunion immigrants, including the guarantees of spouses, children, parents and grandparents.
Spouse or Common-Law Partner Sponsorship
Spousal guarantee is one of the most common forms of family reunification in Canada. Applicable to spouses, common-law partners or marital partners of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. It can be a domestic or overseas application.
Application requirements:
Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident over the age of 18 and meet the remaining requirements of the guarantor,
The authenticity of this relationship must be proved.
There are no specific income requirements for the guarantor spouse (unless the guarantor spouse or partner has dependent children), but the guarantor must prove that they can financially support the spouse.
Applicants must meet the basic requirements of the USCIS such as health and criminal records.
Dependent Child Sponsorship
It is applicable to unmarried children under the age of 22, or children over the age of 21 with special circumstances who are financially dependent on their parents.
Application requirements:
Dependent children must be under 22 years old, unmarried or in a cohabitation relationship. If children over the age of 22 are dependent on their parents due to physical or mental conditions and are unable to support themselves financially, they are still eligible.
The guarantor must provide evidence of the parent-child relationship, such as a birth certificate or adoption documents.
Applicants must meet the basic requirements of the USCIS such as health and criminal records
Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Immigration
Canadian citizens and permanent residents are allowed to sponsor their parents and grandparents, as well as minor siblings, to immigrate to Canada. Due to the large number of applications, this category is usually conducted by drawing lots.
Application requirements:
The guarantor must meet the minimum necessary income (MNI) level of his family size, which is determined by the number of people supported by the guarantor. The guarantor needs to provide proof of income for the past three years, and the income must be higher than MNI.
Applicants must meet the basic requirements of the USCIS such as health and criminal records
Lottery system:
As of 2024, the plan will continue to use the lottery system for selection. The guarantor must first submit a letter of intent through the online form, and the USCIS will invite the selected guarantor through the selection process to make a complete application.
