Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP)

The Atlantic Immigration Program is a program for skilled immigrants who intend to work and live in one of Canada’s four Atlantic provinces-New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island or Newfoundland and Labrador, and those who have obtained an international degree from a Canadian institution.Graduates provide a path to permanent residence. The program helps employers hire qualified candidates who cannot fill positions locally.

AIP project applicant requirements

Spousal guarantee is one of the most common forms of family reunification in Canada. Applicable to spouses, common-law partners or marital partners of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. It can be a domestic or overseas application.

Application requirements:

  • In the past five years, the applicant has accumulated at least one year of paid work experience (the work experience obtained during the study period can be calculated as long as the number of working hours does not exceed the authorized time);
  • the job category belongs to TEER 0/1/2/3/4
  • International students can be exempted from the work experience requirements, but the following conditions must be met:
    • In the four Atlantic provinces, the work experience obtained during the study period can be calculated as long as the number of working hours does not exceed the authorized time). Accredited higher education institutions have obtained a degree, diploma, certificate or mechanic/apprentice certification through at least 2 years of full-time study.
    • At least 16 months of the last 2 years before graduation are resident in the Atlantic provinces and hold a visa or permit required to work, study or receive training in Canada.
  • Applicants engaged in TEER category 0 or 1 occupations need to have at least one year of Canadian post-secondary education or above certificate of education level, or equivalent academic certification documents;
  • Applicants engaged in TEER category 2 occupations need to have at least 2 years of college education or above;
  • Applicants engaged in TEER category 3 occupations need less than 2 yearsCollege degree, or more than 6 months of on-the-job training;
  • Applicants engaged in TEER category 4 occupations usually require a high school diploma and/or several weeks of post-specific training for intermediate jobs outside Canada, and need to pass ECA academic certification.
  • Applicants with an occupation category of TEER 0/1/2/3 need to have at least a language score of CLB 5, while applicants with an occupation category of TEER 4 need to have at least a language score of CLB 4, and the language score must be within the validity period of 2 years.
  • Applicants need to have sufficient funds to support their family’s first arrival in Canada. If they are already living and working in Canada with a valid work permit, they do not need to provide proof of funds.
  • Must be full-time and non-seasonal;
  • The TEER 0/1/2/3 occupational job offer provided by the employer lasts for at least one year (since the applicant becomes a PR);
  • The TEER 4 occupational job offer provided by the employer is long-term and permanent;
  • Except for international students from the four Atlantic provinces, other applicants’ work contracts. The skill level must be the same as the work experience it has, or higher than the work experience it has (see table below)
